Getting Rid of Mobile Bats Without Killing Them

Bats are generally not noticed often since they are flying creatures and active at night. Bats seek safety in dark enclosed places. However if they happen to enter your attic/chimney it is a cause for concern. They usually live in colonies of large numbers. Their droppings called guano stains and corrodes walls, wood and building materials. The droppings are also infested with fungal spores and a health hazard when inhaled. Bats may also be carrier of rabies. Catching of trapping bats is never recommended. The best way to get rid of Alabama bats is by exclusion. They can be forced to fly away and roost elsewhere. It is important to know the species of bat in your home. This is needed to know the maternity season of that species. Exclusion must never be done during the maternity season. Baby bats cannot fly and will die when abandoned. Bat trapping and killing is also not allowed in many states. Exclusion of bats is a procedure covered in four stages. They are given below.

Observation
To get a real understanding of the number of Mobile bats inside it is best to observe them. At dusk the bats flying out can be seen. Observe all the gaps, holes and exits through which they fly out.

Primary Sealing
Seal all gaps and holes with caulk or sealant. Holes as small as 3/8”, have to be sealed. Leave the main entry/exit point in case of any bat inside.

Exclusion Netting
Set up exclusive netting or funnels in the primary entry/exit. This allows bats to go out but not come in. Continue to observe and check to see that all gaps are filled and there are no new exits. Continue to monitor for at least three days to ensure that all bats have left.

Final Sealing & Cleaning
Once you have confirmed that there are no Alabama bats left behind and also there are no new exits remove the exclusive netting and seal the exit permanently. The attic can now be cleaned and all droppings removed. Bat guanos smell bad and also lure other insects like cockroaches. When cleaning it is important to wear protective clothing that is full sleeved. Gloves must be used. Respirators may also be needed. Loose droppings can be vacuumed and surfaces thoroughly scrubbed with enzyme cleaners. Installations have to be replaced or spray cleaned if possible. The entire area must be fogged with special cleaners. The place must be sanitized and regularly cleaned.

Bats are nocturnal and kill all flying insects like mosquitoes, mites and other pests. They are good pest controllers. There are home owners who have a bat box installed to relocate bats from their home. Bat boxes are enclosed structures that allow bats to roost. They are placed near their property. Repellents like mothballs, loud noise, and bright lights may not be a permanent solution if you have a colony of Mobile bats.
